MAT 242: Introduction to Proofs
Spring 2025
hw02
With the exception of survey1, all other items should be completed before next class.- Read the syllabus (the course web page). Bring questions you have to class on Day 2. You will sign something in the next item to indicate you read and agree with the syllabus.
- I would like to get to know each of you a bit. Find survey1 on Moodle and fill it out by Day 3.
-
Read the textbook:
- Read the Introduction pages viii and ix.
- Scan through the table of contents.
-
Read chapter 1: thoroughly read the sections we covered in class today, and lightly skim the sections we are covering next class.
Here is an excerpt from the syllabus:
Read the book! You should prepare for class by looking over the sections we will cover. Your aim is not to understand every detail, but to get a sense of where we are headed. Even a few minutes of pre-reading can help with class time. We will not have time to cover every single detail in class. As such, after class, read the sections carefully again to fill in the gaps. Keep up with the reading: reading large sections right before an exam is less effective.
Always pre-read the section(s) to be covered the next class. I will not explicitly list this starting next homework.
-
Work through the following exercises, staple as a single packet, and bring to next class.
Here is hw02 to turn in:
1.1 # 2, 4, 10, 18, 20, 24, 30, 40, 42, 44. (hint: read p.4)
1.2 # 2abde, 10. (hint: read p.8)When doing homework for this course, always write down the question before answering. (If the question is too long, you need not write it down word for word; you may abbreviate a little as long as the meaning is not loss.)
For example, for #2, you may write $\{3x+2:x\in\mathbb{Z}\}=\{\dotsc,23,241,55112,\dotsc\}$ (that's not actually the correct answer).
Here is an excerpt from the syllabus:
Please staple your homework before coming to class and write your name, PO number, and homework number in the top right corner.
The homework number is 02, because this homework is due on Day 2.
